Relate counting to addition and subtraction (e.g., by counting on 2 to add 2).

Cognitive Complexity Level: 1-Recall

[divider] [/divider] Students are able to…

  • Use a counting strategy with a variety of materials.
  • Find sums and differences through 10.
  • Explain their use of a counting strategy.
  • Look for and explain patterns within the counting strategies they used.

[divider] [/divider] Students are able to…because teachers:

  • Use number lines, objects and charts to engage students in reviewing and extending counting strategies.
  • Pose questions to help students make sense of their counting strategies.
  • Provide opportunities for discussion and comparison of strategies.

[divider] [/divider] Questions to ask students:

  • Ask:  How can you use make a ten to add 7 + 4?
    • Sample answer that indicates understanding: I know that 7 + 3 makes 10. If I break apart 4 into 3 and 1 then I can make a ten and add 1 more to get 11.
  • Ask: Which strategy would be most efficient to solve 8 – 2? 8 – 6?
    • Sample answer that indicates understanding: To solve 8 – 2, I could count back because there is only 2 to subtract.  To solve 8 – 6, it would be more efficient to count up because the numbers are close together.

[divider] [/divider] Resources/Tasks to Support Your Child at Home:

  • Pose problems that deal with adding or subtracting 0.  Have your child model on a number line, using objects (such as beans, cereal, etc.), or by counting aloud using his/her fingers.
  • Use The Math Learning Center: Number Frames to have students practice recognizing numbers and adding or subtracting 0. https://www.mathlearningcenter.org/resources/apps
  • Pose problems that deal with adding or subtracting 1 or 2.  Have your child model on a number line, using objects (such as beans, cereal, etc.), or by counting aloud using his/her fingers.
  • The Math Learning Center: Number Lines allows students to use number lines count on or back 1 or 2.  https://www.mathlearningcenter.org/resources/apps
