Primary Standards:

MAFS.1.MD.2 Identify and combine values of money in cents up to one dollar working with a single unit of currency.

  1. Identify the value of coins (pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters).
  2. Compute the value of combinations of coins (pennies and/or dimes).
  3. Relate the value of pennies, dimes, and quarters to the dollar (e.g. There are 100 pennies, or 10 dimes, or 4 quarters in one dollar.)

Content Knowledge:

First grade marks the first formal introduction of coins.  In first grade, students learn to identify and name coins through exposure and repetition.  For students to truly understand the values of coins, they must understand the quantities 1, 5, 10, 25, and 100 and understand those quantities even without seeing countable objects to represent them.  For pennies, dimes, and dollars, this is a good connection to the place value system and “pre-bundled” tens used in prior units.  This provides the foundation for problem solving with coins in second grade.

The ability to count the value of like coins reflects on students skip counting experiences in kindergarten.  Students routinely counted by ones and tens, so counting to find the value of five pennies or four dimes is an application of these skills.  These tasks can also be connected to visuals such as tracking counts on a hundred chart or with multiple ten frames.

As with all math skills, posing story problems provides a context for students to see situations when we count money.  Posing problems in the forms of the problem structures allows students to see times they might need to count coins and yet another experience with solving math problems.

GCG 1 – Learning Goal: As a Mathematician, I will be able to Identify and Determine the Value of Coins

  • Step 1: Identify Coins (pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters)
  • Step 2: Determine the Value of Coins (pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters)

GCG 2 – Learning Goal: As a Mathematician, I will be able to Find the Value of a Group of Coins

  • Step 1: Find the Value of a Group of Like Coins (includes pennies or dimes and could include skip counting on a number chart with coins)
  • Step 2: Find the Value of a Group of Mixed Coins including pennies and dimes

GCG 3 – Learning Goal: As a Mathematician, I will be able to Relate the Value of Coins to a Dollar

  • Step 1: Relate the value of pennies and/or dimes to a dollar
  • Step 2: Relate the value of quarters to a dollar
