MAFS.K.CC.1.2: Count forward beginning from a given number within the known sequence (instead of having to begin at 1).

Cognitive Complexity Level: 1-Recall

[divider] [/divider] Students are able to…

  • Count forward beginning at numbers other than 1.
  • Count forward beginning from a given number.
  • Understand the counting sequence.
  • Count on from a given number through decade numbers.  (Decade:  10, 20, 30, 40, etc)

[divider] [/divider] Students are able to…because teachers:

  • Provide multiple experiences for students to count forward.
  • Have students begin counting from given numbers other than 1.
  • Encourage students to describe patterns in the counting sequence.
  • Provide tools like number lines and hundreds charts, to support student counting.

[divider] [/divider] Questions to ask students:

  • Ask:  When counting by ones, what number comes after 44?  How do you know?
    • Sample answer that indicates understanding:  45, because the ones place increases by a one.
  • Ask:  When counting by tens, what number comes after 44?  How do you know?
    • Sample answer that indicates understanding:  55, because the tens place increases by one ten.
  • Ask:  What patterns do you notice as you count forward by ones from 32?
    • Sample answer that indicates understanding: I notice that the ones place increases by one and the tens place stays the same.
  • Ask: What patterns do you notice as you count forward by tens from 32?
    • Sample answer that indicates understanding:  I notice that the tens place increase by one ten and the ones place stays the same.

Have students count on through decade numbers.  Record what they do to analyze next steps for support.

[divider] [/divider] Resources/Tasks to Support Your Child at Home:

Give your child a group of items and let them know the number (from 1-50).  Encourage them to count on with more of the object from that given number without starting at 1.  Example:  Here is a set of 45 cheerios.  Keep counting on to figure out how many total cheerios you have.
