MAFS.K.CC.3.6: Identify whether the number of objects in one group is greater than, less than, or equal to the number of objects in another group, e.g., by using matching and counting strategies.

Cognitive Complexity Level: 1-Recall

[divider] [/divider] Students are able to…

  • Compare number of items in two sets.
  • Use vocabulary such as greater than (more than), less than (fewer than), and same as.
  • Identify how much more or how much less one set has compared to another set.

[divider] [/divider] Students are able to…because teachers:

  • Model precise vocabulary of more than, less than, and same as.
  • Provide opportunities to use manipulatives and tools to make comparisons.
  • Expose students to strategies including:
    • Matching
    • Take away or fair share
    • Comparing counts
    • Observation
  • Provide situations in which students are comparing number of like items in two sets.

[divider] [/divider] Questions to ask students:

  • Are there more _____ or _____? How do you know?
  • Are there fewer _____ or _____? How do you know?
  • How many more does ____ have than ____?

[divider] [/divider] Resources/Tasks to Support Your Child at Home:

  • Have a bag of cereal with no more than ten pieces in it. Have your child reach into the bag and pull out two handfuls.  They will use the matching strategy to compare the number of cereal pieces in each hand.

NOTE: Students should match up the number of objects, not the objects themselves.  For example, a rainbow was matched with a moon.  The bag on the left had an extra object, therefore it was greater.
