MAFS.K.MD.2.3: Classify objects into given categories; count the numbers of objects in each category and sort the categories by count.

Cognitive Complexity Level: 1-Recall

[divider] [/divider] Students are able to…

  • Sort objects by how they are alike or different based on a rule
  • Count and compare the number of items in each set
  • Sort objects by a rule that they have identified
  • Describe how their collections have been sorted
  • Determine a rule for a previously sorted set of objects

[divider] [/divider] Students are able to…because teachers:

  • Keep sorting activities limited to ten or fewer objects in each group
  • Facilitate discussion to help students think about and create labels for each set of items
  • Provide numerous activities for students to sort objects
  • Integrate previous and upcoming math content into this standard

[divider] [/divider] Questions to ask students:

  • What were you thinking about when you sorted the blocks?
  • How are these objects the same? Different?
  • Are the objects the same color, size, or shape?
  • What could we call the group: blue objects, round objects, small objects?
  • Which set has the greatest amount of objects? Least amount of objects?
  • How do you know you have more red objects than blue objects?
  • What rule did your partner use to sort their objects?
  • Can you sort these objects a new way?

[divider] [/divider] Resources/Tasks to Support Your Child at Home:

  • Provide a set of household objects and ask your child to sort the objects into 2 (or more) groups. Guess which attribute your child used to sort the objects.  Switch roles.  Have your child guess how you sorted the objects.
  • http://goo.gl/NF3ATo This interactive site allows your child to select the attribute to sort by and then has them use a Venn diagram to sort.  Once they’ve sorted their shapes by attribute, have them count and compare the number in each set.
