MAFS.K.OA.1.5: Fluently add and subtract within 5.

Cognitive Complexity Level: 1-Recall

[divider] [/divider] Students are able to…

  • Add one/Subtract one to numbers within 5 through concrete models, drawings and equations
  • Add zero/Subtract zero to numbers within 5 through concrete models, drawings and equations
  • Recognize that adding or subtracting 0 to numbers within 5 does not change the quantity
  • Understand that adding one more to a number results in the next number in the counting sequence
  • Understand that when you add or subtract by 0, it doesn’t change the quantity

[divider] [/divider] Students are able to…because teachers:

  • Connecting “one more/one less” to the concept of adding 1/subtracting 1 to a number
  • Have students count on and then describe what patterns occur when adding one more or subtracting one less
  • Encourage the use of models, drawings and equations when adding or subtracting
  • Pose “one more/one less/zero more/zero less” problems
  • Facilitate discussions about what happens to a number when adding or subtracting by zero

[divider] [/divider] Questions to ask students:

  • Ask:  What happens to the number when you add or subtract by zero?
    • Sample answer that indicates understanding: The number doesn’t change, it stays the same.
  • Ask: What happens to the number when you add one more?
    • Sample answer that indicates understanding:  The number is one greater than the original number.  It’s like counting on by one.

[divider] [/divider] Sample Formative Assessment Tasks:

  • Pose the following problems and ask what they notice: 0+1, 1+1, 2+1, 3+1, 4+1.  They should notice the sum is one more than the original number.  Continue with adding on zero, subtracting one and subtracting zero.

[divider] [/divider] Resources/Tasks to Support Your Child at Home:

  • Using cereal have your child model…
    • Adding and subtracting cereal within 5
    • Adding one more by adding another piece of cereal to the bowl
    • Subtracting one less by eating a piece of cereal
    • Adding zero more and discussing what they notice
    • Subtracting zero less and discussing what they notice
  • Discuss what your child notices with the number patterns when they add/subtract by counting forward or backwards.
