MAFS.1.G.1.1 Distinguish between defining attributes (e.g., triangles are closed and three-sided) versus non-defining attributes (e.g., color, orientation, overall size); build and draw shapes to possess defining attributes.
Cognitive Complexity Level: 1-Recall
[divider] [/divider] Students are able to…
- Draw and build 2-dimensional shapes.
- Describe attributes of shapes by justifying shape names based on its defining characteristics.
- Classify shapes based on attributes.
[divider] [/divider] Students are able to…because teachers:
- Use precise vocabulary such as: shape, two-dimensional, three-dimensional, rectangle, square, trapezoid, triangle, cube, cone, cylinder, open, closed, sides, vertices, edges, and faces.
- Create scenarios which require students to classify shapes based on attributes.
- Provide opportunities for students to build and draw shapes with specific attributes.
[divider] [/divider] Questions to ask students:
- Ask: Can you draw a two-dimensional shape? Describe the shape you drew using 2 attributes.
- Sample answer that indicates understanding: Student correctly draws a two-dimensional shape and uses precise vocabulary to describe the attributes. For example, student draws a triangle and describes a closed shape with 3 sides.
- Ask: Point to different two-dimensional shapes and ask students to describe the attributes.
- Sample answer that indicates understanding: Student should use vocabulary such as the name of the shape, number of sides, closed figure, angles or corners to describe the shape.

[divider] [/divider] Resources/Tasks to Support Your Child at Home:
- Task: Students can create their own shapes based on defining attributes using online Geoboards. Give your child clues based on attributes such as “I’m thinking of a shape with 4 sides of the same length and 4 vertices.”
- Online Resource – https://www.mathlearningcenter.org/resources/apps/geoboard
- Virtual Manipulates – http://goo.gl/u7R4aP – Attribute Blocks – This interactive manipulative allows you to sort shapes based on a given attribute.
- Name My Shape – Describe attributes of a shape while partner tries to name/draw the shape.
- Task: Give your child popsicle sticks or pipe cleaners. Encourage them to build rectangles, squares, trapezoids and triangles. Have them describe how they know the shape is a rectangle, square, trapezoid or triangle using the defining attributes.
- Task: Give your child toothpicks and marshmallows. Encourage them to build a cube.
