Primary Standards:

MAFS.K.CC.1.3 Read and write numerals from 0 to 20 10.  Represent a number of objects with a written numeral 0 – 20 10 (with 0 representing a count of no objects).

MAFS.K.CC.2.4 Understand the relationship between numbers and quantities; connect counting to cardinality.

  1. When counting objects, say the number names in the standard order, pairing each object with one and only one number name and each number name with one and only one object
  2. Understand that the last number name said tells the number of objects counted. The number of objects is the same regardless of their arrangement or the order in which they were counted
  3. Understand that each successive number name refers to a quantity that is one larger

MAFS.K.CC.2.5 Count to answer “how many?” questions about as many as 20 10 things arranged in a line, a rectangular array, or a circle, or as many as 10 things in scattered configuration; given a number from 1-20 10, count out that many objects.

Connecting Standards:

MAFS.K.CC.1.1 Count to 100 by ones and by tens.

Content Knowledge:

Students in this Unit will build upon learning from Unit 1 with counting objects and developing a sense of number for the values 0 through 10.  Students will continue to learn to count objects and will work towards becoming fluent with the count sequence, pairing each number name said with an object and understanding that the last number name said tells the total number of objects.  Students should be exposed to number words (“seven”, “ten”, etc.) but are not required to read or write the words independently. Although students have heard the term zero, they may not understand that it means having none of something. Some students may take longer to master the skill of writing numerals.  Students will continue to practice writing numerals throughout the rest of the kindergarten curriculum.  This mastery will occur at different times of the year for different students but should be accomplished by the end of the year.

GCG 1 – Learning Goal: As a mathematician, I will be able to Count 0-10 Objects MAFS.K.CC.2.4, MAFS.K.CC.2.5

  • Step 1: Students can count 0-10 objects in a set once and only once with one touch per object (one to one correspondence)
  • Step 2: Students can count 0-10 objects and tell how many things are in the set without recounting (cardinality)
  • Step 3: Students can count 0-10 objects in different arrangements

GCG 2 – Learning Goal: As a mathematician, I will be able to Represent, Read and Write Numerals 0-10 MAFS.K.CC.1.3

  • Step 1: Students can represent 0-10 objects, and understand the last number counted is the number the set represents – without recounting
  • Step 2: Students can read numerals 0-10
  • Step 3: Students can write numerals 0-10
