Primary Standards:

MAFS.K.CC.3.6 Identify whether the number of objects in one group is greater than, less than, or equal to the number of objects in another group, e.g., by using matching and counting strategies.1

1Include groups with up to ten five objects.

MAFS.K.CC.3.7 Compare two numbers between 1 and 10 5 presented as written numerals.

Connecting Standards:

MAFS.K.CC.1.3 Read and write numerals from 0 1 to 20 5.  Represent a number of objects with a written numeral 0 120 5 (with 0 representing a count of no objects).

Content Knowledge:

“Students first learn to match the objects in the two groups to see if there are any extra and then to count the objects in each group and use their knowledge of the count sequence to decide which number is greater than the other (the number farther along in the count sequence). Students learn that even if one group looks as if it has more objects (e.g., has some extra sticking out), matching or counting may reveal a different result.” (Progressions Document) This concept should be taught using the Concrete to Pictorial to Abstract model of learning.  All students should begin comparing values by representing the values with concrete objects to build understanding.  Once students demonstrate an understanding of the concepts of “more” and “less”, they can then move on to a more efficient strategy of drawing pictures. Ultimately, students will finally be able to compare the values represented by the written numerals.  Some students may need more time to advance through these three stages of understanding.  Additional practice with this concept will occur again in Unit 4, comparing values through 10.

GCG 1 – Learning Goal: As a mathematician, I can Use physical objects and pictures to compare quantities 1-5 MAFS.K.CC.3.6

  • Step 1: Students can compare physical objects in 2 sets using various strategies (matching, observation, fair share, counting)
  • Step 2: Students can compare physical objects in 2 sets using various strategies and use appropriate vocabulary – greater than (more), less than (fewer), same as to compare
  • Step 3: Students can compare pictures of objects using various strategies and use appropriate vocabulary

GCG 2 – Learning Goal: As a mathematician, I can Write Numbers to Compare Quantities 1-5 MAFS.K.CC.3.7

  • Step 1: Students can label 2 sets of concrete materials or pictures with the appropriate numeral and use of appropriate vocabulary to compare them
  • Step 2: Students can tell which number is greater than, less than, or same as by looking at the numeral
